Russia's Oscar Entry STALINGRAD Breaks Box-office Record in Debut — Todd Cunningham, TheWrap.com
Fyodor Bondarchuk's STALINGRAD opened at $15.5 million this past week-end in Russia and the Ukraine. STALINGRAD is Russia's official entry for the Academy-Awards® Best Foreign Film category. Shot on a $30 million budget, the film tells the story of the 1943 Battle of Stalingrad, including a love story between a Russian woman and a German soldier, and is completely shot in native 3D utilizing 3ality Technica's TS-5, SIP™, and RED Epic cameras. The film is produced by Sergey Melkumov, Alexander Rodnyansky, and Dmitriy Rudovskiy.
Steve Schklair, 3ality Technica's CEO, is credited as the 3D producer who says, "I personally got involved with this project because it was one of the most brilliant scripts I have ever read. I absolutely fell in love with the script." Matthew Blute led the 3D team as Stereographic Supervisor. 3ality Technica's 3D engineers included Josh Fritts, Rafiel Chait, Gayle Hillary, and Shawn Dufraine, and the 3D Technicians were Geoff Bund and Celine Tricart. Told from the victorious Russian perspective, STALINGRAD is the first non-American movie shown in the IMAX format and is being distributed by Sony.

 | Shot with 3ality Technica's TS-5 and SIP™
Stalingrad was completely shot in Russia utilizing 3ality Technica's TS-5 and SIP™. 3ality Technica worked with the production team to anticipate production challenges and provide upfront solutions. The film was shot with a break in the middle for the winter period. The big battle sequences were shot in the fall in the historically accurate St. Petersberg. Schklair noted, "The film is set at night but St. Petersberg is virtually daylight 22 hours a day. At first, I thought that was a very strange decision. I then realized why it made perfect sense. By relying on the sun, you can do a beautiful job turning day into night using CGI techniques."

 | RAFIEL CHAIT PHOTO SERIES: RUSSIA IN 90 DAYS
Rafiel Chait, Stalingrad A Camera Engineer, spent 3 months in Russia and describes the time as "90 of the most terribly wonderful days he's ever experienced." Chait remains, "amazed at how much Russia is trapped in both its past and in its future, because they are so entrenched in their way of thinking, stuck on a path to the future beyond their control." In his photographic series, Chait tried to capture and convey the daily life experiences both on and off-set from the perspective of a long-term visitor.
His takeaway from being part of the crew, "Working on Stalingrad was an amazing experience—especially seeing how Russian filmmaking is done, how different the process is from American filmmaking, and how they ended up with a spectacular film through a different path."
Chait's experiences have been summarized in a series of photographs that can be seen on his web-site. In addition, 3ality Technica is proud to present a selection of key images via our social media sites. Click to follow us and see more about Stalingrad and other 3ality Technica projects.
