Footage Formats for Demo Reel Inclusion

The formats that we need to request may be different depending on how they were originated and how we want to show them. With that in mind we would prefer to have them for specs pertaining to the Hyundai 3D, JVC 3D and Mitsubishi 3D monitors. Here are the specs on the Hyundai and JVC:

• Hyundai 3D Monitor
• JVC 3D Monitor

They can both take a variety of resolutions and formats. But, neither can deal with interlaced footage in line interlace format, for obvious reasons. If you want to feed the monitor 50i or 60i, it needs to be in side by side format. The JVC specifies that it does 50 and 60 (PAL and NTSC). The Hyundai doesn't specify either, but we've seen it do both.

Here is what we would request in regard to a format, but of course it depends on how it was originated. This is also the ideal situation.

Side note: Another thing to consider is that although our monitors might be able to directly display the 50i footage from a soccer game for instance, I would assume that it couldn't be mixed with other footage on the same reel. The display probably has to autodetect what format it is being given and if it changes constantly it probably wouldn't work. But for that soccer footage, it may be good to just have it made into side by side 50i and maybe it can be played right away. But then we'd need to convert it for reel use, or experiment with mixing 50 and 60.

I would request L and R eyes for everything so we can make whatever else we want later. I would also request everything as digital files in Apple Pro Res 422 HQ.

Originated in 23.98 psf or 23.98 pn (1080 or 720): same format and resolution

  • L and R eye separately
  • Side by Side
  • Line Interlace
  • DVI Mesh

Originated in 60p 1080 or 720: same format and resolution as recorded

  • L and R eye separate
  • side by side
  • line interlace
  • dvi mesh

Originated in 60i 1080: same format and resolution

  • L and R separate as 60i
  • L and R separate as 60p
  • side by side in 60i
  • dvi mesh in 60i

Originated in 50i 1080: same format plus conversions

  • L and R separate as 50i
  • L and R separate as 60i
  • L and R separate as 60p
  • side by side in 60i and 60p
  • line interlace in 60p
  • dvi mesh in 60p

Originated in 50p

  • L and R separate as 50p
  • L and R separate as 60p
  • side by side in 60p
  • line interlace in 60p
  • dvi mesh in 60p

For standards conversion, it would be important that they are using something that does a good job at it. For instance, on the rugby matches we used the snell and wilcox "Alchemist". Broadcasters use it as well. Their main competitor in standards conversion is teranex. Not familiar with their product line though. It's possible to use final cut, compressor, or even the AJA FS1's that we have. But, the cheaper the box, the worse the conversion, it can create artifacts and make motion look odd.

Before getting all this footage in and going through costly standards conversion, we should do a quick test on the hyundai and mitsubishi to see if footage in the same quicktime will continue to play when mixing 50i, 60p, and 24p. would guess it won't work because even the $10,000 transvideo gets confused when you switch formats on the fly, but you never know, it might work. That would save a lot of trouble. But, we could only use side by side because i formats won't work in line interlace.
